Violin

An elegant violin from the the Parisian School of violin making. Its tone is warm, melting and romantic and has good volume and projection. A versatile violin, it can blend well in orchestral or ensemble settings while also delivering ample assertiveness, character and response for solo performances. The varnish is a refined luminescent orange-brown color which has been applied over a lighter blond color, as evidenced by the beautiful patina on the back plate of the violin.

Émile Germain was born in Paris in 1853. He first apprenticed in Mirecourt as was customary for many of the Parisian makers. He then return home to apprentice with his father, Joseph Louis Germain, who in turn collaborated with renowned makers such as Charles François Gand, Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, and Charles Adolphe Gand. In 1870, Émile took over his father's business and collaborated with M. Dehommais until 1882. He subsequently established his own workshop at 62 Rue de Bourdaloue in Paris where he independently built instruments until his death in 1933. Émile was a prolific maker, producing over 50 instruments a year, and won the gold medal at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition.
