Hermann Richard Pfretzschner (1881–1953), a pivotal figure in the world of German bow making, emerged as a key figure in Markneukirchen's instrument-making trade. Trained by his father, Carl Richard Pfretzschner, in a modest Saxonian atelier, Hermann displayed remarkable talent early on, excelling in wood craftsmanship and music. In 1872, equipped with his exceptional skills, he embarked on a transformative journey to Paris, joining Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume's prestigious workshop, where he became Vuillaume's last major student. Returning in 1880, Hermann pioneered French bow making in Germany, introducing contemporary styles influenced by François Nicolas Voirin.

Throughout the turn of the century, Voirin's influence permeated Hermann's bow making, maintaining a balance between experimental styles and preserving his reputation and entrepreneurial successes. In 1901, Pfretzschner started stamping the frogs of his bows with the Saxony coat of arms after the House of Saxony granted him the title of "purveyor to the Royal Saxon Court". His bows started showing influences the English makers around this time. In 1914, Hermann stepped down, leaving his well-operated business to his sons, Hermann and Berthold Pfretzschner, marking a legacy that weathered the turbulent 20th century.
