This Hopf violin showcases the work of the well-known German Hopf violin-making family and workshop. Its square design, wood selection, and varnish are characteristic of its provenance. The top is made from medium-grained spruce, and the one-piece back features maple of light flame. The instrument is in excellent condition, with minor cosmetic wear and no history of major repairs. It produces a warm, silvery sound with a pleasing texture. The high notes are clear and singing. Comfortable to play and well-balanced, it is an excellent choice for advancing students.

Condition: In good condition, only minor cosmetic wear that adds to its patina and charm. No signs of cracks or major repairs.

Back length: 35.7 cm

The instrument has been fit with a new set of strings and new case.

  2. Meet us in Oslo. You can meet us in person and try your instrument in the wonderful acoustics at Gamle Raadhus Scene in the heart of Oslo. You are welcome to try all of our instruments and bows there.
  3. Video chat. We would be happy to have a video chat with you to discuss our instruments and play them side by side. Just send us a message to schedule an appointment.

The Hopf family, one of the most well-known names in Germany lutheier, originated in Klingenthal, Germany, with Caspar Hopf (1650-1711) being one of the earliest known luthiers in the family. This family became prolific in the violin-making trade from the late 17th century through the 19th century. Over this period, the Hopfs produced a wide range of instruments, often noted for their distinctive square design and arching. Hopf violins are still sought after for their historical significance and unique sound qualities
