This is a fine violin with a rich and interesting history. Typical of Schoenfelder's instruments, this violin has a clean, fresh, and smooth tone that is reinforced with power and resonance. It showcases further classic Schoenfelder characteristics, including a one-piece spruce top, a maple back with fine grain, delicate purfling close to the edge, and a dainty and elegant scroll. Truly one of the more masterful examples of early Markneukirchen violin making, this lovely instrument has been recently restored and is ready to play the most challenging musical repertoire.

  • Condition: Generally good condition. Some cracks on the top plate that have been repaired and are stable. Upper-left corner has been replaced. Scroll is original, but the instrument underwent a neck graft at some point in time.
  • Length of back: 35.5 cm
  • Labeled: "JOHANN GEORG SCHOENFELDER, Lauten- und Geignemacher in Neurkirchen bey Adorf 1795". Below the label, the instrument is braned "I*G*S" with the maker's logo.

Johann Georg Schönfelder (1750 - 1824) was a prominent luthier from the Vogtland region in Germany, active during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born into a family of violin makers, Schönfelder was undoubtedly the most talented maker in his family and is renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and designs. His violins are identified by their unique style, which includes delicate purfling close to the edges, elegantly carved scrolls, finely-grained spruce tops and beautifully flamed maple backs, and meticulous construction. These instruments are known for combining strength with a fresh, clean and clear tone. Schönfelder's work significantly influenced the violin-making tradition in Markneukirchen, where contemporary luthiers still use his instruments as models to this day.
