Piernot has captured an unusual combination with this bow. Heavy, strong sticks like this can create a big, bold sound but can be sluggish and hard to maneuver. This bow, however, also manages to be lively and full of energy. This bow gives clean, crisp and sophisticated articulation - great for work off the string. Piernot is an underappreciated maker whose work is starting to gain popularity. This bow is an example from Piernot’s “golden era” when he was working in the Vigneron workshop.

This bow was made during a desirable period of Piernot's career when he achieved the best results, thanks to his apprenticeship with Vigneron père at that time.

  • Length: 74.4 cm
  • Materials: The stick is round pernambuco, with nickel silver mountings, and the frog is of ebony.
  • Condition: Good throughout, and has been recently rehaired. New winding and thumb leather. There is a a small amount of grain lift towards the tip. There is also minor curvature of the stick but in the desirable direction and is not disturbing to the player.

Marie Louis Piernot (1880–1959), a French bow maker of the early 20th century, underwent his apprenticeship under Charles Nicolas Bazin, working with him from 1892 to 1900. Following this, he joined Vigneron Père's workshop in 1900 and later moved to Léon Bernadel's workshop in 1906 after the death of Vigneron Père. In 1923, Piernot established his independent workshop at 13 rue de la Liberté in Paris, and by 1930, he relocated it to Parmain (Seine et Oise). Post-World War II, he returned to Paris, setting up his workshop on Avenue Ledru-Rollin.

Piernot is one of the more underappreciated bow makers of the early 20th century but his work is starting to gain some popularity amongst musicians. The bows from his earlier career, starting in ca. 1900, when he was apprenticing with Vigneron, achieved the best results as they demonstrate the the influence of Vigneron père.
