Despite that this is a heavy bow, the balance point is shifted towards the frog so that it feels remarkably light in the hand. This bow was made by an anonymous but very talented maker in the School of Maire. Nicolas Rémy Maire (1800–1878), a renowned French archetier, began his illustrious career training in the Lafleur workshop and apprenticing under Étienne Pajeot in Mirecourt. Establishing his own workshop in 1826, he later worked in Paris for Gand, Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, and Georges Chanot. Maire's bows, influenced by Dominique Peccatte in the 1850s, evolved into a lighter model after 1860. Despite facing financial challenges, he produced a substantial number of high-quality bows, notably for Pajeot, Gand, and Vuillaume. His craftsmanship, akin to Pajeot's style, varied over time, and he also created bows reminiscent of Peccatte during his Paris years. Maire, a significant figure in 19th-century bow making, left an indelible mark on the craft.
