Eduard Sitjas Bonet

Eduard Sitjas Bonet

Girona, Spain

Eduard Sitjas Bonet, born in 1985, comes from a family with deep roots in the tailor trade since the late 19th century. He fondly remembers the melodious strains of classical music permeated his grandfather's shop, leaving an indelible mark on Eduard's developing appreciation for sound quality—a passion lovingly transmitted by his father. He has a special fondness for the Beethoven's Concerto for Violin in D Major as he often recalls hearing this while playing in his grandfather's shop and around his uncle's woodturning lathe.

The turning point in Eduard's life happened during a trip to the workshop of Xavier Vidal with his father in 1997 to look looking for a new violin. The artisan atmosphere of the workshop, with its wood, tools and creative atmosphere, captured Eduard's imagination. Already a dedicated student of the violin, he was enchanted by the artisan realm that was found in Xavier Vidal's workshop.

After graduating high school in 2004, Eduard committed himself to the path of becoming a luthier. His apprenticeship unfolded in the very Barcelona workshop where, under the watchful guidance of Master Eduard Bosque, he honed the art of high-quality setup work and cultivated a distinctive sonic vision before delving into the intricacies of carving.

In 2006, Eduard embarked on a transformative journey to England, enrolling in the prestigious Newark School of Violin Making. The culmination of his efforts materialized in 2009 when he graduated with merit. This formal education was complemented by invaluable work experience in Paris alongside Serge Boyer and in Florian Leonhard's distinguished London workshop.

The year 2010 marked Eduard's return to Girona, where he co-founded a workshop with Alexis de Pauw. By 2012, he boldly ventured into establishing his solo studio. Collaborations with esteemed luthier companions like David Bagué and Jose Catoira ensued, cementing his reputation in crafting and restoring violins, violas, and cellos.

Further enriching his already extensive expertise, Eduard embarked on brief workshop placements in Cremona. There, he assisted the seasoned expert Mathijs A. Heyligers and delved deeper into the intricacies of 17th and 18th-century baroque instrument making and high-end restoration.

Eduard's specialization evolved to bench copies of masterpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries which been met with enthusiasm from a number of discerning professional musicians.

Eduard also has a deep interest in the setup and sound adjustment of both modern and baroque bowed instruments underscores his commitment to optimizing sound quality and ensuring the comfort of the player.

Situated in the charming Onyar River houses of Girona, Eduard Sitjas Bonet's workshop stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication to classical lutherie. Here, he ardently pursues both the creation and restoration of instruments.
